Isis Eve Independent Project
Two months ago, me and my peers were asked to create independent projects. We were given the choice to do whatever we would like to do, in any medium. I struggled a lot to decide what a good project would be, but after some drafting, re-writing and planning out. I decided I wanted to create paintings that embody the saying “only they can know me best, meaning only they can hurt me the worst,” a kind of love that is ruthless and harsh. But it is love nonetheless. Each painting represents its own pain and its own timeline, each colour has a reason to be there and every piece means something in its own right. In my first painting I painted a heart on a cathedral floor, a man leaving his heart out for the love of his life to find and (hopefully) accept. The second, the rose is a beautiful thing, but it digs mercilessly into the hand, beautiful but harmful. The third, a ring digging into the finger, it hurts, but it is beautiful and it is a representation of how even if he remains harmed, he will stay with his lover. The fourth is a deep dive into the violence of their relationship, of arguments and pain. The band around his arm embodies a celtic band of love, lazy carved into the skin like a forever brand. The last painting represents how the characters, even if reluctant, are tethered together. They love one another even if it can be harmful, it means the world to them to be with each other and they would never be anywhere else but stuck together, stabbed in the stomach or not. These paintings mean a great deal to me as I stepped far out of my comfort zone to paint these, not only that but I hoped to capture the beauty of the idea. Even if really, their relationship is anything but beautiful.
